Colin -- your comments about attachment and agency remind me of Ainsworth's The Strange Situation, in which the healthily attached children were the ones who did NOT cling to their caretakers but felt comfortable going off on their own, checking in only occasionally. To extend to place attachment theory and your thought/questions about attachment styles. . . maybe the healthiest place attachment fosters agency through self-actualization? Still too vague, but a thought.

Hi Sarah and YES to that idea! It made me wonder if I'd been thinking of things backwards wrt place attachment. In trying to translate from person to place attachment, maybe it's the place that has an attachment style rather than the person. What would an ASQ for places as opposed to people look like?

I LOVE that idea. And I think that's a good way to go. For example, transitional spaces (hotel or corporate lobbies, corridors) vs. urban squares vs. urban parks. Oh my I could go on and on about this one . . .

Yes! I also love that it makes places animate participants in attachment rather than just lumps of physicality.
